Vegetable Scheme

Key Stage 1 School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme

The School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme (SFVS) provides free fruit and vegetables to children aged 4 to 6 in state-funded schools in England, promoting healthy eating habits and contributing to their daily nutritional needs.

Overview of the Scheme

The SFVS is a government initiative aimed at improving children's health by encouraging the consumption of fruits and vegetables. It entitles every child aged 4 to 6 in fully state-funded infant, primary, and special schools to receive a free piece of fruit or vegetable each school day. This initiative is part of the national 5 A DAY program, which promotes the consumption of at least five portions of fruits and vegetables daily.

Key Features

  • Eligibility: All children aged 4 to 6 in state-funded schools are eligible to receive a piece of fruit or vegetable daily. This helps to ensure that they receive at least one of their five daily portions through the school.

  • Delivery and Distribution: The fruit and vegetables are delivered to schools three times a week to maintain freshness. Teachers distribute the items in class groups, fostering a social and educational environment around healthy eating.

  • Nutritional Benefits: The scheme aims to combat the low intake of fruits and vegetables among children, as research indicates that many children in England consume fewer than the recommended portions. By providing these healthy snacks, the SFVS helps to instil lifelong healthy eating habits.
